“All I want...” he said, “is thirty seconds” (2022) is a recent body of work that utilizes custom, ephemeral 3D renderings and inkjet prints as either finished work or source material to visually inform and complicate the paradoxical permanence of my oil paintings. In this system, I emphasize technology as a tool for direct sensation. Through cyclical processes of embodied construction and destruction, I examine my queer identity to prompt the viewer to question the complexities of self-image and the transgressions of external perception.

 As I examine eroticized bodies and environments, I define a slippery call-and-response system of looking that blends primordial and contemporary dreams of homoerotic desire. When classical references are in conversation with queer histories of visual exchange, such as cruising, I create moments of missed glances through body mirroring, compositional cropping, and material erasure. This line of making blurs the line between those who desire and those who are desired. By engaging these questions, I interrogate the experiential stakes of my own queer longing through historical traditions of hiding in plain sight.

 While a scream is considered a captured, invisible force in relation to horror, I question what the invisible and unnamable forces that relate to beauty are. Through the embodied process of painting, I examine the disparity between the human hand and the machine to bridge the contradictory nature of forming and losing an identity. As one desires something until the moment they have it, my work eludes identification to illicit dreams that were never one’s own to fulfill. Eternally grasping, never reaching, my work revels in the chase itself.

In the project, Ineffeable Vessels of Insatiable Release (2022), I complicate bodily recognition by examining the presence of light within the intermediary space between liquid and solid. Enamored with camouflage, I highlight the indescribable eroticism of physical touch as translucent, glass-like figures traverse and melt through water. By democratizing sensation beyond the body, I create 3D renderings as sketches and consequently put them in conversation with traditional oil painting techniques, such as grisaille and glazing, and camera-less cyanotype processes. By putting parts of my practice in competition with one another, I create a dichotomy between exquisitely modeled and brutalized spaces to further obscure the viewer's perception of form and formlessness through light. 
 
In prioritizing light over color, I emphasize the extremities of value through assorted grayscale and limited color palettes, guiding the subtly of indirect color mixing, paint application, and light exposure. As a result, I create broad ranges of legibility through seductive entrances and repellent exits to lure and displace the viewer and their bodily awareness in relation to my work. By resisting formulaic readings, such as who, what, and where, I go beyond the semantics of a 'pretty image' and instead utilize beauty as a complex mediation between torture and pleasure.

They’re Quiet Now (2021) is a collection of 4 oil paintings that examines the performance of masculinity through imagery based on 3D computer-rendered scenes. Within the language of sexualized kitsch, ranging from tacky 90s superhero camp to John Galliano era Dior advertisements, I depict an illusion of transparency as homoerotic digital figures take on a gelatinous, glass-like appearance. Through taking stock of the objectively bland qualities of the hypermasculine forms, I investigate what is considered a perfect body, what it means to have a body, and what it means to be perceived as a body. In this line of interrogation, I contemplate how perfection impacts sexual desire.

Informed by this visual lexicon, I construct various scenarios that codify highly eroticized states of castration anxiety through accumulative paint applications, varying from controlled to chaotic. Rooted in weaponized ambiguity, I hide these figures in plain sight to question the role of consumption and taste through a conflict of optical understanding. What is seen? What is lost in translation? 

As the imagery exists in a hallucination, the work represents a battle between idealization and inescapable reality. By painting these scenes, instead of merely 3D rendering them, I embrace the romantics of failure. The human hand can never live up to the perfection of a computer. But what does it mean to try? The paintings, therefore, utilize the overperformance of painting to translate digital overconsumption through the limitations of the human condition.

The Fellows Backstage Will Do (2020) is a series of 7 digital collages that unpack set construction to dissect the fall of the idealized American Cowboy. A cowboy typically represents a patriarchal colonizer under the guise of a rugged warrior that aids in the 'development of civilization' at the expense of people of color. Despite this, many queer artists, such as Tom of Finland, have approached disassembling the binary through queering and fetishizing the cowboy trope. While this can increase exposure of queer narratives, it also can create reiterations of hegemonic masculinity by prioritizing certain queer male relations over others.

 As a result, my work ironically makes fun of essentialized hyper masculinity as various replaceable actors interact with an ever-changing set as they play the role of a 'cowboy' or a 'farmer' in a grotesque and fragmented manner. In order to covey the death of the male ego, I feature the distorted actors in both moments of action and moments of wardrobe change to showcase frontier masculinity as a curated façade. By working in black and white, I use the language of the western film genre to emphasize the liminality of sets as both public and private spaces. At first, the viewer only sees the illusion of the scene, in which the repetitive figures horrifically merge and melt within elements of the set.

As this disturbing relationship continues, I destroy the viewer's understanding of reality by removing them further from the narrative, as more and more set equipment and crew members appear. In breaking the logic of material and imagined space, I revel in the fine line between pathos and bathos to destroy the imaginary concept of man. By destabilizing this thought process, I create a conscious investigation about the power of gender performance.

In the body of work, Can You Help Me Find The Remote? (2019), I create compositions that contrast heteronormative imagery with homoerotic imagery through the continual reference of various romantic films from the history of cinema. In this project, I focus on films that revel in the campy and overtly sappy American idealizations of what love is historically defined as. Due to these films as pop-culture symbols, I acknowledge their original format by painting the effect of a translucent film layer over an eerie landscape with a limited color palette. The film layer is formally inspired by “screen caps”, popularized by social media sites such as Tumblr and Twitter. Screen caps traditionally feature frames of a scene with stylized closed captioning, which informs the viewer of the spoken dialogue. Through painting these various compositions, I disrupt the historic tradition of landscape painting by creating scenes that simultaneously blur and heighten the differences between heterosexual and homosexual narratives. When a straight narrative is presented with a gay narrative, I investigate the inherent value determinations that arise from having one narrative superimposed over another. By generating environments from multiple sources, I present a body of work that asks the viewer to assess which narrative deserves the most importance.

Through the compositional use of two figures, The Vulnerability Behind the Veil (2018) as a project explores both the internal and external responses to the development of human relationships. I explore barriers through the use physical items, such as wet drapery, to create a blatant juxtaposition of being incredibly close, through the power of touch, yet vastly detached, due to a veil of separation. Similarly, my work also explores barriers that are less tangible, evident in the use of a singular line. By outlining each lover in a solid color, I create a visual border that defines each figure from not only one another, but also the environment that surrounds them. To adequately explore the barrier tension between the lovers and their environment, I frequently work in multiples that reference the structure of film stills to effectively convey a linear narrative. By emphasizing thematic structures, I generate an intrinsic conversation that links the viewer and their respective emotions to the blatantly melodramatic themes prevalent in this body of work.
